“Travel is an investment in yourself”

Traveling does something to your body, heart, and soul. I remember the first time I went on a plane – I was 16 and off to Spain on a high school trip. As I sat in my seat, I looked around absolutely amazed at every little detail of that plane. The buttons, the screens, the flight attendants – it was all so magical. As the plane took off, an overwhelming feeling of excitement came over me, and from that point on I knew this was only the beginning of my travel career.
Eleven years later, I can honestly say, I still get that exact same overwhelming feeling of excitement the minute I step onto a plane – anyone who has flown with me can attest to that. The whole thing truly amazes me – flying to a new country and culture, just wow! Since that ripe age of 16, I knew I wanted to get paid to travel. In fact, I remember sitting next to our guide while touring around Spain and asking her every and any question that came to mind regarding her job, life, passions, dreams, etc. Her life of travel amazed me, and the fact that she got paid to do it, amazed me even more. That is when the first spark lit inside of me… I needed to figure out how to make this my career.
Schooling has not been my biggest source of education – Nope, not even close. Some may find this funny, especially coming from a teacher, however, secretly I think that is what makes me a better teacher. Travel has most definitely been my biggest source of knowledge, compassion, social skills, self-confidence, love, discovery – this list could truly go on forever. They don’t teach you about alternative lifestyles in school therefore, I always made sure to teach using REAL LIFE, non-conventional information and alternative ways of teaching.
Throughout my travels (personal and professional) I have definitely learned a couple of valuable lessons, from some pretty badass people, which I would love to share with you!
Be open-minded
Remember to approach every situation with an open mind and make a conscious effort to fully embrace all the new cultures, people, traditions, modes of transportation and food. When you do this, opportunities will start flowing your way.
Be Mindful
Go with the flow & do NOT stress about the concept of time. Time is one of the only entities you cannot purchase, therefore take the time to embrace the loss of time. Live up every moment and make sure to be fully present within that moment. Heck, close your eyes when savoring a beautiful meal, Scream Halejula at the top of your lungs when seeing a beautiful view… You do you!
Be Social
Travel is one of the only times you will be able to sit at a table with 10 people all being from 10 different countries. Socializing with new people, in new places brings you incredible perspective. How do you know that what you know is true, if you have never considered a different opinion or perspective? Take the time to talk and listen – you will learn a great deal about yourself, others, history and life itself.
Be YOU
Take this gift of time to really be yourself. When you are being true to yourself, you are being honest with your emotions, your values, your desires and the people around you. This is your time to meet other like-minded humans – you won’t find them if you are pretending to be someone you are not. Your vibe attracts your tribe!
If you follow these four simple tips, your trip will be incredibly life changing – you will then be prepared to share your stories and change the world in your own unique way!
And now I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book Eat, Pray, Love…
“Traveling is the great true love of my life. I have always felt, ever since I was sixteen years old and first went to Russia with my saved-up babysitting money, that to travel is worth any cost or sacrifice. I am loyal and constant in my love for travel, as I have not always been loyal and constant in my other loves. I feel about travel the way a happy new mother feels about her impossible, colicky, restless newborn baby—I just don’t care what it puts me through. Because I adore it. Because it’s mine. Because it looks exactly like me. It can barf all over me if it wants to—I just don’t care.”
So, why do I travel… because traveling has taught me so many lessons about life, love and it constantly challenges me to be a better version of myself. Now, Go book a plane ticket and then share with me – Why travel is so important to you?
